Wohngeld Amount in Essen – How Much Support Is Possible
How much Wohngeld you receive is calculated individually: household size, income, rent and the rent level of your city decide. Essen is in rent level IV. There is no flat rate – the binding amount is stated in your decision.
These 4 factors determine the Wohngeld amount
Income
The lower the household's total income, the higher the subsidy – as long as a minimum income is reached.
Rent
The higher the rent, the more Wohngeld is possible – limited by the maximum amount.
Rent level
Essen is in rent level IV. Higher rent levels mean higher maximum amounts.
Wohngeld Plus: higher subsidies since 2023
With the Wohngeld Plus reform on 1 January 2023, Wohngeld was increased significantly – on average from around 190 euros to around 370 euros per month. Significantly more households have been eligible since then.
Since then, a permanent heating cost component and a climate component are also included in Wohngeld. On 1 January 2025, Wohngeld was raised again – by around 15 percent on average. A regular adjustment every two years is required by law.
