Wohngeld Documents – the Checklist for Your Application
For the Wohngeld application you need proof of your home, your income and your household. This checklist helps you gather all the important documents.
Checklist: these documents belong to the Wohngeld application
- Tenancy agreement for your current home
- Landlord certificate (Mietbescheinigung) – form provided by the Wohngeldstelle
- Proof of rent and utilities (e.g. bank statements, rent receipts)
- Proof of income for all household members (e.g. payslips from the last few months)
- Pension decision (Rentenbescheid) if you receive a pension
- Proof of other income (e.g. child benefit, maintenance, unemployment benefit, sickness benefit)
- ID card or passport of all household members
- Your bank account details for the payment
- If you receive maintenance: proof of maintenance payments received
Which documents are required in individual cases depends on your household and income situation. The Wohngeldstelle will tell you if documents need to be submitted later.

Are copies of the documents sufficient?
For the written application, copies are usually sufficient. Only submit originals if the Wohngeldstelle expressly requests them.
What is a landlord certificate (Mietbescheinigung)?
The landlord certificate is a form completed by your landlord. It confirms the rent, utilities and the size of your home to the Wohngeldstelle.
Which proof of income is required?
Usually the income records of the last few months – for example payslips, pension decisions or decisions on other benefits of all household members.
