What the rent level means
In Germany, municipalities are divided into seven rent levels – from level I (low rent market) to level VII (very high rent market). The classification is laid down by statutory order.
For Wohngeld recipients, the rule is: the higher the rent level, the higher the maximum amount up to which rent is considered for Wohngeld. Essen was upgraded from level III to level IV in the last adjustment.
