The Wohngeld tables form the basis of the calculation: they contain the maximum amounts for rent per household size and rent level as well as the income limits. The binding amount of your Wohngeld is determined by the Wohngeldstelle.
What the Wohngeld tables show
Minimum income
The income a household must reach at least to receive Wohngeld.
Formula values
Calculation parameters of the Housing Benefit Act with which the Wohngeldstelle determines the amount in each individual case.
Up-to-dateness of the table values
The table values change with statutory adjustments – most recently on 1 January 2025, when Wohngeld was raised by around 15 percent on average. A regular adjustment every two years is required by law. The decision of the Wohngeldstelle is always decisive for your payment.

Why do the values differ by rent level?
Housing is more expensive in cities with a higher rent market – therefore higher maximum amounts apply there. Essen is in rent level IV.
Do the table values change regularly?
Yes – the legislator generally adjusts Wohngeld every two years, most recently in 2023 (Wohngeld Plus) and 2025.
