Wohngeld Plus – the Reform and What It Means for Essen
With the Wohngeld Plus reform on 1 January 2023, Wohngeld was significantly increased and expanded – more households are entitled in Essen too. Here are the key facts.

The 2025 increase
On 1 January 2025, Wohngeld was raised again – by around 15 percent on average. A regular adjustment every two years is required by law.
What this means for Essen
Rent level IV applies to Essen – it determines the maximum amounts up to which rent is considered for Wohngeld. Due to the reforms, more low-income households are eligible here as well.
