Whether you receive Wohngeld depends on several factors. The most important are: your income, your rent, the number of people in your household and the Mietstufe of your city. Essen belongs to Mietstufe VI — that's good for you. We explain all the requirements in detail.
The Basic Requirements
To receive Wohngeld, you must meet these basic conditions: You live in Germany and are registered there. You occupy the dwelling yourself (main tenant or subtenant). You have your own income. You do not receive other social benefits that exclude Wohngeld (such as Bürgergeld or basic income support in old age). The rent must be in reasonable proportion to your income.
Income — What Counts and What Doesn't?
For Wohngeld, the total income of all household members is considered. Income includes: employment income (gross minus income-related expenses and social security contributions), pensions, child benefit, maintenance payments, parental allowance (proportionate), sickness benefit and unemployment benefit I. Not counted as income: Bürgergeld and basic income support (these exclude Wohngeld anyway), long-term care insurance benefits, certain parts of parental allowance and the basic pension supplement.

The household community includes all persons who permanently live in the dwelling and share the household budget. This is usually: the applicant themselves, their spouse or partner, children (including adult children as long as they receive child benefit) and other direct relatives (parents, grandparents). Important: Household members who themselves receive Bürgergeld or basic income support are not counted as part of the household eligible for Wohngeld.
Rent — What Is Reasonable?
Wohngeld is only paid for reasonable housing. What is reasonable depends on the Mietstufe of your city and the household size. Essen belongs to Mietstufe VI — the second-highest level in Germany. This means comparatively high rent caps. If your actual rent exceeds the cap, Wohngeld is only calculated on the basis of the cap. You can find the exact maximum amounts on our Mietstufen page.

Special rules apply for certain groups: Retirees can receive Wohngeld if they do not receive basic income support in old age. Students may be eligible for Wohngeld under certain conditions (especially if they do not receive BAföG). Families with children benefit from higher income and rent caps.
