More and more retirees are entitled to Wohngeld — often without knowing it. The Wohngeld-Plus reform 2026 has once again significantly expanded the circle of eligible retirees. We explain when Wohngeld is worthwhile for retirees and what special rules apply.
When Are Retirees Eligible for Wohngeld?
Retirees can receive Wohngeld if they do not receive basic income support in old age. This is the crucial point: Wohngeld and basic income support are mutually exclusive. Anyone receiving basic income support does not get Wohngeld — and vice versa. Important: Anyone who does not apply for Wohngeld just because of basic income support may be missing out on money. Because not every retiree with a low pension must receive basic income support — some have more money available with Wohngeld.
Pension as Income — What Counts?
For the Wohngeld calculation, the gross pension is counted as income. Deducted from this are income-related expenses (minimum €102 flat rate) and health and long-term care insurance contributions. The basic pension supplement (since 2021) remains free of charge — this is an advantage for low-income earners with long insurance periods.
Wohngeld or Basic Income Support — Which Is Better?
This question cannot be answered universally, but there is a rule of thumb: If your pension is above the basic income support requirement, Wohngeld can be the better choice. Because with Wohngeld, assets and savings are treated much more generously than with basic income support. Owner-occupied property also plays no role with Wohngeld, while it counts as an asset with basic income support.
Example Calculation for Essen
Mr. W. (72) from Essen receives a monthly net pension of €980. His net rent is €450. He has €15,000 in savings. With basic income support, his savings would be counted (above the protected assets). With Wohngeld, however, he can expect a subsidy of about €180-250 per month — without his savings playing any role.
