How Much Wohngeld Can I Get in Essen?

The amount of Wohngeld is not a flat rate but is calculated individually for each household. Three factors determine how much Wohngeld you receive: your income, your rent and the number of people in your household. Essen has Mietstufe VI, one of the highest Mietstufen in Germany — this has a positive effect on your potential Wohngeld.

The Three Factors of Wohngeld Calculation

The Wohngeld calculation takes three main factors into account. Depending on how these factors apply to you, your Wohngeld may be higher or lower.

1. Income

The lower your countable income, the higher the Wohngeld. Allowances and certain types of income are not counted. The income of all household members is added together.

2. Rent

Up to a certain cap (depending on Mietstufe and household size), the rule is: the higher the rent, the higher the Wohngeld. If the rent exceeds the cap, Wohngeld is only calculated up to the cap.

3. Household Size

More people in the household mean higher rent caps and higher income allowances. Wohngeld increases with each additional person — but not linearly.

Average Wohngeld Amount

The Wohngeld-Plus reform has more than doubled the average Wohngeld. Nationwide, households receive an average of about 370 euros per month in Wohngeld. In Essen with its high Mietstufe VI, the average tends to be slightly higher, especially for larger households. However, the actual amount varies greatly depending on individual circumstances.

The Wohngeld-Plus Reform 2026

The Wohngeld-Plus reform has fundamentally improved Wohngeld. The most important changes: A permanent climate component offsets rising heating costs. A heating cost component takes actual energy costs into account more strongly. Income limits have been significantly raised, so about two million more households are now eligible. The average Wohngeld has nearly doubled from around 190 euros to 370 euros.
